Networking and Communication Activities

EmPOWERment trainees are exposed to a wealth of opportunities designed to advance their science communication and professional skills, and help them build connections with other students and seasoned professionals working within the energy sector.

Throughout their tenure in the program, trainees will be expected to participate in activities designed to teach them how to communicate pressing issues related to sustainable energy to both scientific and non-scientific audiences; encourage interdisciplinary collaborations between a diverse network of students, faculty, and practitioners; and equip them with the professional skills necessary for a future career related to sustainable energy.

Activities

Trainees are expected to participate in weekly gatherings of the Sustainable Energy Student Community of Practice and Engagement (SCOPE). Energy SCOPE offers a mix of formal and informal activities that combine professional development, psychosocial support, networking, and discovery.  SCOPE students are given opportunities to gather to discuss with seasoned professionals the political, economic, or historical dynamics of recent industry news; seek coaching; interact with industry practitioners; extend their professional networks beyond academia; lead or work on a student co-curricular project; role-play during a professional-skills workshop; propose research for presentation at a conference; travel as a young professional; learn about faculty’s cutting-edge research; or debate personal character and professional choices in a book/film salon addressing the ethical dimensions of science and engineering.  Energy SCOPE is hosted through OSU Battelle Center.
